Ever wanted to blast through the 300 yard barrier?

Well, read on and find out just how hard you need to hit it to reach your goal.

That mythical three hundred yard number is one of those that we all want to break, even if it’s just one time! Like breaking 80 or getting your handicap to single-digits, if you have the ability to hit a drive 300 yards, you somehow get more respect than someone who hits it 200 and down the middle – every time!

But how do you hit the ball 300 yards? Of course, timing, technique, physical strength and time itself are required. But if you’re up for a challenge and want a goal to aim for, let’s get to it.

GOLF Top 100 Teacher Andrew Rice conducts lots of studies using launch data, which you can read on his website. 108mph is the magic number that Andrew tells golfers if they come up to him saying they want to hit the ball over 300 yards – and that’s with the driver of course!

But it’s not quite that simple. Swinging the club 108mph isn’t enough in itself. According to Rice, you need to hit the ball well, and control factors like spin and launch will affect the amount of yardage they can get out of your swing speed.

“Obviously, the strike must be good, the launch high enough and the spin rate fairly close to 2000 rpms.” Rice says.

Perhaps one of the most underrated drivers of the late ’90s and 2000s is that of David Toms. Rice calls Toms the “most efficient driver ever,” and he is perhaps the best example of a player who got the most out of his swing speed given that he wasn’t the tallest pro on tour out on the PGA Tour.

Toms averaged 2.78 yards for every mph of swing speed and was routinely one of the most consistent drivers on tour.

Take a look at the table below from Foresight Sports which provides a baseline for what you need for 300 yard drives. Not just in terms of swing speed, but also launch and spin.
